The highest mountain of Greece, famous since the antiquity as the residence of 12 Gods constitutes an extensive massive mountainous area with a lot of tops at altitudes over 2000m., with its highest peak Mytikas, 2917m.
Since 1938, it has been designated as National Forest for its geological formations as well as its flora and fauna, which contains a lot of rare species.
Since 1985, it has also been designated as archaeological and historical site while in 1981 UNESCO characterized it as preservable section of world biosphere.
The Litochoro is a starting point for the climb up Olympus and a place where nature lovers, hikers and climbers can stay.
The climb up Olympus to
the tops and refuges takes place from three basic routes,
the most famous of which is the international path E4. Daily outings in the vicinity on foot or by car are to Agios Ioannis, Enippea canyon,
the monastery of Saint Dionysios, the “Stavros” refuge and the location "Prionia".
